One Breath, One Fish -- Spearfishing in the Good 'Ole Days
As a 7-year-old boy, my mom would take my brother and me down to Sandsprit Park, in Stuart, Fla., on the weekends. She'd equip us with home-made fried chicken and cold colas. We would spend the day exploring the Manatee Pocket with our snorkels. The water was clear back then and had marine life everywhere. I could not get enough of the crabs, puffer fish and stingrays. From then on, I was infatuated with the silent underwater world, and I felt connected to it.
Several years later, my dad was transferred to the Coast Guard base in St. Petersburg. We turned old broomsticks and nails into spearguns. Our playground was the docks and pilings at the Coast Guard base. We stalked sheepshead and snapper. It was easy to become one of Captain Nemo’s crew searching for adventure in the mysterious underwater world. One fish with one breath soon became addictive.
It didn’t take long for us to dream of bigger fish and more
underwater adventures
. We would load our bike baskets with gear and peddle to the nearest bridge to swim along the pilings. This soon became our private
underwater hunting
grounds. We honed our spearing skills on the abundance of spadefish, filefish, sheepshead and snapper. We were always excited to ride home with our baskets full of fish.
After my dad retired, our family moved back to Port Salerno. It was great to be back where our old hunting grounds had expanded beyond our wildest dreams. The St. Lucie inlet became our new underwater hunting sanctuary. The only boat traffic there was the the commercial fishermen, but they gave us leeway.
Back then, there was almost no Marine Patrol presence there, so jewfish, turtles and just about everything else were legal to spear. There were very few who were into
spearfishing
at the time, so we felt like we were kings under the water. Over the next few years, there was a boom in the population, and boat traffic became too overwhelming to dive with. We had to move our spearfishing south to “The Hole.” We never came back without a cooler full of snapper and grouper like we used to.
Recreational
boating and fishing
, quickly became very popular, and our spearfishing trips soon turned dangerous. My brother and I were almost run over by boats several times, and boaters even threw lead sinkers at us. We realized most people didn't understand what we loved most.
We were accused of destroying the reefs and running off all the fish. For the next several years, our reefs were used by those who thought the only thing you should shoot with was a camera. We were scolded to not touch but only look. Back then, if we went into a
dive shop
looking for spearguns, we were sent nasty looks and got hateful remarks. It was sad to think the sport I loved was nearing its end.
Spearfishing is the most sustainable way to harvest fish, so I couldn't understand how others thought we were murdering the sea. In Spearfishing, only one fish is targeted at a time depending on its type, size and if it's in season.There is just no way spearfishermen can deplete an entire species.
Fortunately, extreme sports have made a comeback, and spearfishing is popular again. It is growing at a 15-20 percent per annum rate.
Modern-day spearos are more in tune with their environment than any other. They observe the condition of our reefs and fish up close and personal. Spearfishing gear is much more efficient than it used to be, making our means of harvest and the chance of lost fish minimal. There is nothing like spearing a wahoo in the deep Blue Water of the Gulfstream. One breath, one fish is really very rare, and we spend most of our time just trying to get a shot at our wary prey all while experiencing their beautiful, exhilarating, mysterious underwater world.
