I want to know all about it. brief description would be good.
Romanticism was a cultural, social, artistic, and intellectual movement during the late 18th and early to mid 19th centuries in Europe. It referred to artists, poets, writers, musicians, as well as political, philosophical and social thinkers of those times and how they influence society and culture through their works.
In order to understand why the Romantic period came into development we have to look at the period before it. Before Romanticism was the Enlightenment period (early 18th century Europe), where philosophers and intellectual thinkers were promoting logic, science, reason, and began to question whether we should practice old traditions and religion or should we move on to pure thinking and rationalizing of the natural world and disregard those practices. A number of intellectuals of that time hinted that reality is all there is and there is no need for religion, we humans can govern ourselves, it's in our nature to know right from wrong, not from religion. They weren't against tradition and religion but they questioned ancient beliefs, medieval ways of thinking, etc. to understand whether ancient practices should be continued or disregarded. They also had the idea that man can master nature.
After the Enlightenment came Romanticism. Enlightenment promoted cold, hard logic and reason. Romanticism questions, is that all there is to being human? What about emotions, feelings, arts, music, etc. Romanticism countered the Enlightenment, it was a period that encouraged being artistic, musical, romantic, poetic, reviving medieval thought, and things of that nature and those elements influenced the arts, music, literature, poetry, culture, etc. of that time. They also disagree that man can master nature and nature is independent and uncontrollable.
About the paintings:
The Caspar one is about how Romanticism reflects on the Enlightenment idea that man can master nature. The "Raft of Medusa " painting shows that nature is uncontrollable and can destroy anything. Thomas Chatterton is one one of the poets of the Romanticism period.
The Voyage of Life Childhood is about when you are young, you are carefree in the world living in fantasy. The Voyage of Life Manhood is about when you are older, you will have struggles along the way. The Voyage of Life Old Age reflects that when you are older and near to the end of life on earth, your voyage will continue or end in the afterlife (it's just the artist's beliefs).
There's a lot more things that came out in those periods with influences on culture, politics, science, arts, literature etc. which leads to why the world is the way it is today. That's as simple as I can explain it.
