More Great Information on Chili Peppers:
Crock Pot Chili
What food will warm you up right through without the worries of having to come home from a long day of work and slave over a hot stove. The answer to that is crock pot chili. What better way to go about your dinner plans than make them the night of morning before and when you come home you have a wonderful worry free meal. Many people are no stranger to chili cooked on the stove top but the crock pot just made it that much better. That whole time your chili is simmering in the crock pot it is making that chili of yours more and more flavorful. Most people have their basic chili just with kidney beans and meat.... Each competitor has one hour to prepare and two hours to cook their chili. Each of the chilis must conform to a specific standard - which doesn't include beans or pasta. It was drilled into us that it was not spaghetti sauce, it was not pulled pork, it was chili and had to be judged as such.2:00 pm rolled around and we re-grouped for the first taste test. We had ten green chilis to sample. There were rules - and very specific rules - we were to follow. First of all, the chilis were brought to us and set up around a long table. Each bowl had a number between 1 and 10, which did not correspond to the various competitors' tents - those numbers were on the bottom of the bowl out of view to the judges.Between each bowl was a container of clean spoons and a tray for dirty ones. There were also bottles of water and beer, green grapes, sour cream and flour tortillas between each bowl. We were given ballots, numbered 1 - 10 and a pencil. We were to judge each chili according to certain criteria - aroma, color, heat, blend of spice, texture and other aspects. We were not allowed to discuss our thoughts with the other judges. A written comment was to be made about each chili - whether it was too salty, the meat was mushy, if it was too hot or to bland - whatever we thought. But each and every chili had to have a comment. Then we were off!I started at number 8 and proceeded counter-clockwise around the table. I picked up my clean spoon, stirred the chili, and lifted the spoon to my nose. Mmmmm smelled delicious. I looked at the color - a nice, rich green - and then tasted. Nice and hot (spicy), the meat was tender but not overcooked, the spices were well blended. It was amazing! I threw my spoon into the "dirty" container and picked up my can of beer to cleanse my palate. A small piece of tortilla with sour cream finished the "cleanse" and I noted my findings on my ballot. On to the next chili - clean spoon, stir the chili, take a nice spoonful and bring it to my nose to enjoy the aroma. This time the color was not as "fresh", the meat was mushy and the chili was entirely too salty. Again, I noted my findings on the ballot. By the time I came around to the end, I had four that I really liked and had to go back and re-taste those. It was not easy, but finally I chose my first, second and third and turned in my ballot.
