Art canvas printing took off with the invention of Giclee. Giclee printing came into the printing world some time in the 1990s. Giclee in French language meant a nozzle and that is the clue for the genesis of Giclee print on canvas. Giclee, depending on the way the word is used, can also mean spraying or squirting. When the printmaker who invented this art or science used an inkjet printer that he modified he found that he was able to produce digital prints that could later on actually be used as objet d’art. The kind of metamorphosis the art canvas printing underwent in the years following its introduction in the world of art was truly epochal. Today, you will find that the business of generating a Giclee print on canvas has very little similarities with the days when Giclee was just introduced. The work neither involves the screens nor any other mechanical device. You will, therefore, not see the kind of patterns that you would normally get to see in dot screens. However, modern day prints do have the hues and tone of the original painting.
Art canvas printing adopting the Giclee painting process does not use the kind of normal inkjet printers that were used earlier. The printers also do not use the normal inks any more.
