Many would be Artists start out with all the enthusiasm of a Cinderella going to the ball, and, sadly wind up as one for the ugly sisters.
Why do attempts, however well intended, go terribly wrong.
Pull up your chair and lets discuss a few of the nasty's.
Home builders constructing a house would always need a "Plan" of some kind.
Would be Artists, draws idea on paper. Cannot wait to flow on those vibrant colors, and starts with "No Plan".
Never thought about a "Thumbnail Value Sketch" showing where the darks and lights will be arranged.
Never thought how they wanted the viewers eyes to travel around their painting.
You only have a short space of time to hold viewers interest, in a quick blink of an eye you lost them, on to the next painting - WHY -because you did not plan some Basic Rules on organizing a composition plan.
It is too late when you have that loaded brush, that brush you just could not wait to apply to the paper.
My friends you cannot "wing it" with brush in hand.
Put the brush down and start again, Choose a Subject.
Decide what format suits the subject best, vertical, square or horizontal.
Now quickly using a very soft pencil or magic marker produce a "Thumbnail Sketch" 4" x 6" showing the darkest darks next to the lightest lights.
The rooms in the Building Plan are linked by hallways and winding staircases.
You link the dark and light shapes together creating rhythm and movement.
Try to make five to ten shapes. Light values, halftone light, middle value, half tone dark, and dark. Make shapes varied, repetition with variety remember light against dark.
Now decide on where to place the area of interest (keep this area about a 1/16th of the total picture size i.e. 20" x 30" painting.) This impact area will be about 6"x6" or 4"x9". This should be adequate.
Area of interest should never be in the center or close to any edge and comprise of the Brightest Colors, Sharpest Contrasts, complimentary colors and hard edges should define where you want the viewers eye to go.
You will find that a good painting doesn't require a genius. All it takes is a good planning.
A house without a plan? A painting without a plan?
These have been some of the major points to help viewers linger over your paintings and appreciate them for all their beauty and skilled execution.
This has been just the tip of the iceberg on composition, but this little part of the overall subject will help you well on your way to increase the appreciation of your work.
