Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640 ), the most eminent representative of flemish art, and one of the best painters of any university, was born very in all probability at siegen, in westphalia, within the 29th of june 1577. Until some thirty many years in the past cologne water could possibly nonetheless claim the honour of having been the master"s birth place; the renish city is mentioned by rubens himself, in one of his letters, as closely connected with his childhood, and through his fathers epitaph we find for more than nineteen ages cologne was the household"s place of refuge amid the disturbances prevailing in the low countries. By the age of 21, he was believed to be a Master for completing his studies, and in 1600, he traveled to Italy. Rubens loved all of Titian's work, and was heavily influenced by him. He also loved Roman art, and did the Lacöon Drawing from the marble statue that was unearthed during the Renaissance. His picture depicts his consciousness from the human body and the facts are very realistic. As he journeyed through Italy, he acquired patrons like the Duke of Mantua and Archduke Albert of Austria. The Archduke commissioned Ruben's first altarpiece; a triptych of St. Helen and the True Cross finished in 1601. He then visited Spain in 1603 to view the Titian art collection of Phillip II. He soon returned to Italy, and painted the altar at Santa Maria because Cardinal Jacopo Serra gave him the job. It depicts St. Gregory the Great. Being in Italy had a leading impact on Rubens. Most if the letters he wrote were in Italian, and he signed his name Pietro Paulo Rubens. While in Italy, he received word that his mom was ill, and he went back to Antwerp. But when he got home, his mother was dead. Peter decided to stay there, and was appointed court painter to Albert and Isabella, governors on the Low Countries. On October 3, 1609, he married Isabella Brant, daughter of humanist Jan Brant. The next year, they entered a house Rubens had designed, which gave the impression of an Italian villa. It had a workshop, studio, and a personal library and art gallery. In 1610, he painted Raising with the Cross, which is 1 of his most famous triptych paintings. It has Italian influence, specially the way the body is portrayed. But, it has its Baroque aspects to it, like the use of chiaroscuro, with Jesus being boxed in by light and the outer being obscured by dark areas. The overall theatricality of the piece makes it Baroque. This piece was intended for the Cathedral of Our Lady. His next big commission was by Marie de Medici, the Queen of France. She wanted Peter to paint two series, the Marie de Medici Cycle, and the Louis XIII Cycle, which would portray their lives in a number of portraits. Marie's was finished in 1625, but Louis was never completed, for they were thrown from power by their son and Louis was murdered. Marie moved to the Netherlands after being removed from the throne. Around this time, Rubens started to be a diplomat for the Spanish Hapsburg rulers. His goal was to bring peace between the Spanish Netherlands and the United Provinces which were owned by England. During his life, Peter received many gifts for being an artist. He was knighted twice, once by Phillip IV of Spain, 1624, and Charles I of England, 1630. He was awarded Grasp of Arts degree by Cambridge University in 1629. He was also extremely very well connected with all the royals in all the lands through his diplomatic missions. Unfortunately, Isabella died in 1626, and he was devastated. He remarried in 1630, to a 16 year old girl named Hélène Fourment. He was 53. Later on that year, he painted Allegory of Peace and In 1635, he bought le Château du Steen, which was situated in France and it used to be a peaceful place to live. Hélène inspired him in all his future paintings, for she was a voluptuous woman, and the curvy figure was popular then. The word Gospel usually designates a written record of Christ's words and deeds.
The four Gospels, the sacred character of which was recognized very early, differed in several respects from the numerous uncanonical Gospels which circulated during the first centuries of the Church.
First , they commended themselves by their tone of simplicity and truthfulness, which stood in striking contrast with the trivial, absurd, or manifestly legendary character of many of those uncanonical productions.
They had an earlier origin than most of their apocryphal rivals, and indeed many of the latter productions were directly based on the canonical Gospels.
A third feature of our canonical records of Christ's life was the purity of their teachings, dogmatic and moral, over against the Jewish, Gnostic, or other heretical views with which not a few of the apocryphal gospels were tainted, and on account of which these unsound writings found favour among heretical bodies and, on the contrary, discredit in the eyes of Catholics.
The canonical Gospels were regarded as of Apostolic authority, two of them being ascribed to the Apostles St. Matthew and St. John, respectively, and two to St. Mark and St. Luke, the respective companions of St. Peter and St. Paul.
Many other gospels claimed Apostolic authority, but to none of them was this claim universally allowed in the early Church.
The only apocryphal work which was at all generally received, and relied upon, in addition to our four canonical Gospels, is the "Gospel according to the Hebrews". It is a well-known fact that St. Jerome, speaking of this Gospel under the name of "The Gospel according to the Nazarenes", regards it as the Hebrew original of our Greek canonical Gospel according to St. Matthew.
But, from its fragments which have come down , it has no right to originality as compared with our first canonical Gospel.
At a very early date, it was treated as devoid of Apostolic authority, and St. Jerome himself, who states that he had its Aramaic text at his disposal, does not assign it a place side by side with our canonical Gospels: all the authority which he ascribes to it is derived from his persuasion that it was the original text of our First Gospel, and not a distinct Gospel over and above the four universally received from time immemorial in the Catholic Church.
