HOW ENGLISH COULD PROMOTE DEMOCRACY, PEACE & PROSPERITY AROUND THE WORLD!
Mainstream Americans often appear to be the least informed about and the least sensitive to cultural differences that distinguish and separate people—a failing that has a negative impact on our business, diplomatic and personal interactions with other countries. This is a problem that will not be resolved until the study of other cultures becomes a fundamental part of the education we receive in our youth. But there is a built-in barrier that must be overcome before this education would become meaningful. This barrier is the failure of people in general to understand that key words in languages—not things—are the primary repository and transmitter of cultures, resulting in them downplaying or ignoring altogether the role of languages in the values and behavior of people. In all languages there are dozens to hundreds of examples of culturally pregnant “code words” that have meanings and uses that are unique to those languages and do not carry over in word-to-word translations. As a result of this circumstance the world is continuously roiled by misunderstandings, friction and violence. Even when we are knowledgeable about cultural differences and make a sincere attempt we often do not communicate fully and effectively across the differences that are contained in these special terms. In fact, however, these key words make differences in the cultural content of languages relatively easy to surmount because they are gateways to understanding the values and behavior of the people who are native speakers of the languages concerned. The invention of systems of writing was one of the greatest boons to the development and influence of languages because learning how to read and write a language programs it into the brain on levels not covered by sound alone. The Chinese system of writing in Hanzi [Hahn-jee], or “Chinese characters,” is the most powerful and telling example of this influence. Learning how to read and write some two thousand or more of the complex Chinese ideograms as the Chinese, Japanese and Koreans must do to be literate is a major undertaking that requires intense study and practice for several years and is a process that has a fundamental impact on their perception of and reaction to things, on their overall character, and on their physical dexterity. The impact of learning to read and write Chinese characters as a child is far deeper and far more comprehensive than the influence of other writing systems on other people because the Hanzi are pictorial representations of real things and explicit concepts—not just letters that represent sounds. The fact that one must be intimately familiar with key terms in the native language of a people in order to fully understand their thinking and behavior is of incredible importance, but it is not yet common knowledge even among scholars and educators, much less diplomats, politicians and the international business community. Now there is another language factor that must be taken into consideration in communicating within and across cultures, and that is the growing incidence of the creation of new words and the application of new meanings and uses to existing terms—a phenomenon that is often disruptive and dangerous since it creates additional barriers to understanding. In advanced countries the continuous creation of new words and changes in the meanings of old terms has created cultural gaps between the generations that often result in tension and friction that is revolutionary in nature. However, despite the fact that languages are continuously and rapidly evolving they remain at any particular time the repository as well as the transmitter of cultures. Their special terms contain the essence, the tone, the flavor and the spirit of their cultures and sub-cultures. For one thing, the critical role of language in the attitudes and behavior of people provides irrefutable evidence that to become American in the fullest sense one must learn American English as it is spoken by old as well as new generations. Multiple languages in a country mean multiple mindsets, which typically lead to friction and violence of one kind or another. Given the nature and influence of languages, I propose that the role of languages in the values and behavior of people be made a mandatory course in all schools, from kindergarten through university.
