More Great Information on Yorkshire Terrier:

Silky Terriers—Sweet and Adventurous Dogs

My silky terrier is 18 years old and still going strong. She does not hear or see well but her health is good. It actually is good now that she cannot hear well because she used to be terrified of thunder; she would sit in my lap during a storm and just shake. As you can imagine for a dog that old, she sleeps quite a lot. When she isn’t sleeping she is wondering around the house checking out all the smells. She is a little weird in that she likes to lick things excessively; for example, if you put her on a textured sofa, she will lick the thing from end to end and if you interrupt her, she gets mad.

Silky terriers
are sweet dogs and they often get mistaken for Yorkshire Terriers. Silky terriers are from Australia; whereas, Yorkshire terriers are from Yorkshire in the U.K. A silky’s hair is much thinner than a Yorkie’s and does not grow as long. Silky terriers tend to start out black as puppies—just like Yorkshire Terriers--but then they get a white coat over the black which makes them look gray. Though I am sure there are sweet, demure Yorkies, I found that my silky terrier was much milder in personality than my Yorkshire Terrier. The Yorkie always wanted to be the big, bad guard dog, barking up a storm; on the other hand, my Silky terrier seldom barked at all and seemed uninterested in being a guard dog.

My silky terrier is also a follower not a leader, but quite
adventurous
, nonetheless. When my other dogs would break out of the yard, she was sure to follow on the excursion around the neighborhood. But while my other dogs would be checking out the neighbors’ yards and kids, my silky terrier would take off for home. No matter where she ended up, she would always find her way back to the front or back door, scratch on it, then wait to be let in. One time when we lived in a house that had snakes and other Wild Animals in the woods behind it, she took off for hours in the evening. I thought she would be dead for sure. But at 2 AM, there was scratching at the back door, and there was my silky terrier—wet and dirty but unharmed—waiting to be let in.
